My daughter made pizza for the first time and wow... did she make a good one!
Recently we took a trip to Champaign/Urbana to visit the University of Illinois and we stopped by Papa Del's Pizza for a late lunch. Since Papa Del's is one of my favorite deep dish pizza places, I had to let her try it as well. Unlike the typical Chicago-style deep dish pizzas which have deep but thinner crusts, Papa Del's Pizza has a thicker bread-like crust.
Since then, we did some research on the internet and found this recipe for a version of this great pizza. Click here.
So today, I ran out and bought all the ingredients (I bought too much cheese, but who cares!) and we started making the pizza early in the afternoon. Because of all the prep time involved, the overall time to make this pizza was about 5 hours! Of course, cooking time was only 45 minutes, but you do have to allow for all the time needed to let the dough rise.
While it was not quite a real Papa Del's pizza, I'd say it was pretty close! We learned some things along the way (like to pre-cook the sausage before putting it in the pizza to cook... there were a lot more sausage pieces hidden below the sauce and cheese) but next time, the pizza will be near perfect! If you check out the photo of her pizza, I'd say she did pretty good for a first time, don't you think?
Deep Dish Pizza... if you live in Chicago, you know why we crave it!
